The centre is situated Southwest of Manchester approximately 4 miles from the city centre, within a densely populated residential area. The centre was constructed in phases over a 7 year period from 1967 to 1974. The latest extension to the Southwest elevation, was completed in 1989 giving an additional 27,500sq. feet of retail space, making a total square footage of 347,000sq. Feet. There is both surface and multi-storey car parking for approximately 920 vehicles.
In November 2003 the Centre was changed from Arndale Centre to Stretford Mall.
